We're officially at that point in October where Halloween candy has been in the house for two weeks, the decorations are either fully up or still sitting in a storage bin, and every trip to Target somehow ends with something pumpkin-shaped in the cart. We'd love to say we're exercising some self-control, but there's a pretty good chance the candy we bought for trick-or-treaters is going to need replacing before October 31. And speaking of Halloween, we've been thinking about how much fun this time of year was when we were kids. Back when picking out a costume was a major life decision, the school Halloween party was the social event of the season, and a trip to McDonald's could result in you coming home with an actual piece of trick-or-treating equipment. Yes, we're talking about those little Halloween buckets. And yes, we have opinions about which one was the best. We've also got a new episode to get into this week, so grab your coffee, ignore your inbox for a few minutes, and come hang out with us. Last week we covered the Caleb Flynn Parts 1 and 2, if you missed them you can listen here! And last week Patreon Members received Jade Colvin on Murder Mixtape and The Family I Had Part 2 on DocJams. Catch up on those or join the Patreon here! As always, Patrons will receive parts 1 and 2 of the weekly release on Tuesday. If you're feeling a little FOMO and want part 2 immediately, you can check out the Patreon here! The McDonald’s Halloween BucketsThere was a time when McDonald’s wasn’t just giving us a Happy Meal toy, they were giving us our entire trick-or-treating personality. If you grew up in the late ’80s or ’90s, you probably remember the little plastic Halloween buckets that came with your Happy Meal. McBoo. McPunk’n. McGoblin. Those little orange, white, and green pails were EVERYTHING. And getting the one you wanted was a serious matter because you couldn’t just casually accept McGoblin when your heart was set on McBoo. You’d carry that thing around the house for two weeks before Halloween, practicing for the big night like you had some kind of candy-collecting career ahead of you. Then October 31 rolled around, and there you were, proudly walking through the neighborhood with a plastic bucket that could hold approximately seven full-size candy bars before the handle started digging into your fingers. And after Halloween? That bucket wasn’t going anywhere. It became crayon storage, a container for random Happy Meal toys, a place to stash Halloween candy you were hiding from your siblings, or something your mom kept in the garage for the next 15 years. McDonald’s really gave us a Happy Meal, a Halloween costume accessory, and a family heirloom for about three dollars. Honestly, we had it pretty good. Your Turn to Pick the CaseYou know that one story you wish more people were talking about? Yeah… we want that one. Send us your case suggestions and you might hear it featured in a future episode. Thanks for hanging out with us for a little bit. We know October has a way of filling up with school events, weekend plans, costume decisions, and approximately 47 reminders that somebody needs to bring snacks to something. Hopefully, you get a little time this week to enjoy the fun parts of the season too. Watch the Halloween movie you've seen a hundred times, buy the ridiculous seasonal snack, or drive around and look at the houses that have clearly spent more on Halloween decorations than the rest of us spend on Christmas. And if you happen to come across one of those old McDonald's Halloween buckets in your parents' garage, please appreciate the fact that you're holding a genuine piece of millennial history. Especially if it's McBoo. Have a great week, take care of yourselves, and we'll be back in your inbox next Tuesday with more true crime and whatever childhood memory we've collectively unlocked by then. |

We have officially entered the part of the year where every morning requires a small investigation before getting dressed. It's chilly when you wake up, somehow 78 degrees by lunch, and by the time you figure out whether you need a sweater, the weather has changed its mind again. Welcome to October. 🍂 We're settling into spooky season over here, which means the Halloween decorations are coming out, we're pretending buying another seasonal candle is a completely reasonable financial decision,...
Is anyone else at the point in the year where every week feels like it lasts approximately three days? You blink, it's Monday. You answer a few emails, suddenly it's Thursday. Then somehow you're standing in the kitchen on Sunday night wondering what exactly happened to the weekend. So we're officially giving you permission to ignore whatever you're supposed to be doing for a few minutes and hang out with us instead. Last week we covered Reckless Ben & The Lego Saga Parts 1 and 2, if you...
Happy Tuesday, friend! We need to know who decided September was allowed to move this fast. Because somehow we're already at that point where the mornings feel a little more like fall, the calendar is packed, and we're starting to realize all those things we said we'd “get to once summer was over” are now staring directly at us. Rude. So grab your coffee, ignore your to-do list for a few minutes, and come hang out with us because we have a very weird one for you this week. It starts with a...
