Jessica Gonzales, Castle Rock, and School Picture Day

Somehow we're already halfway through September, which feels impossible considering we were just complaining that summer was too hot approximately five minutes ago.

But here we are.

The kids are back into their routines, the mornings are getting a little darker for most of us in the U.S., football has taken over the weekends, and Target is doing everything in its power to convince us that it's basically Halloween already.

Meanwhile, we're still trying to figure out what happened to the first half of the month.

So before somebody asks you what's for dinner, needs a ride somewhere, or sends you another email that absolutely could've waited until tomorrow...

Grab your coffee, claim a few minutes for yourself, and let's catch up.

We've got a lot to talk about this week.

Last week we covered Death of the Pastor's Wife Parts 1 and 2, if you missed them you can listen here!

And last week Patreon Members received Abby Sacco on Murder Mixtape and The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill on DocJams. Catch up on those or join the Patreon here!

As always, Patrons will receive parts 1 and 2 of the weekly release on Tuesday.

If you're feeling a little FOMO and want part 2 immediately, you can check out the Patreon here!

Don't forget to make sure you're subscribed to our YouTube Channel!

We will have Jessica Gonzales and Castle Rock and dropping on YouTube Thursday - you don't want to miss it! Subscribe and watch here!

While you're checking out YT, visit Tyrella's channel, Tyrella Off Record to watch her latest videos on all the most talked about cases, including what's current with Lindsay Clancy and Nolan Wells.

Currently on Tyrella Off Record

Lately, there has been a LOT to keep up with, with all the cases and trial ongoing.

That's exactly what Tyrella Off Record is for. The cases everyone's talking about rarely stay still, and you shouldn't have to piece together five different headlines and a TikTok comment section to figure out what actually happened.

Whether you prefer longer breakdowns on YouTube, quick updates on Instagram or TikTok, listening podcast-style, or getting The Record Briefing in your inbox each week, Tyrella meets you wherever you like to keep up.

No racing to conclusions. Just following the evidence, sorting fact from speculation, and making sense of the developments that actually matter.

However you like to stay in the loop, Tyrella Off Record has you covered.

School Picture Day

No stock image needed today. Instead, we treat you to a Tyrella throwback, circa 1990-something. Keep reading, because we pulled more of these gems out of the vault.

There was always one morning every fall when your mom suddenly cared very deeply about what you wore to school.

Picture Day.

This was not the morning to suggest your favorite Old Navy fleece and butterfly clips.

An outfit had been selected, the hair had been discussed, and somewhere in your backpack was an envelope containing a check for a completely reasonable number of photographs of an 11-year-old.

Then you got to school and immediately had one concern:

Please let our class take pictures before P.E.

Because your mom did not spend 20 minutes doing your hair that morning just for you to play dodgeball and run a mile before 10 a.m.

Eventually, your teacher announced it was time.

You'd line up with your entire class and wait for your 45 seconds in front of a complete stranger who was about to give you a series of instructions that somehow made you forget how your own body worked:

  • Sit on the stool
  • Turn your shoulders this way
  • Now look at me
  • Chin down a little
  • Tilt your head
  • No, the other way

And by the time they finally said “Smile!” you were sitting in a position no human being had ever naturally sat in before.

But you smiled because you had ONE SHOT.

There was no checking the picture. Absolutely no deleting it.

And we all know there were zero retakes because you didn't like your smile.

You simply returned to class and waited several weeks to discover what you'd done.

Then one glorious afternoon, your teacher dropped a giant envelope onto your desk.

And there it was.

The photo your grandmother was about to display in her living room for the next 15+ years.

And if your school offered one of those completely unhinged backgrounds? Icing on the cake.

You know the ones. Lasers usually, but sometimes clouds. Or a vaguely glamorous gray-and-blue situation.

Maybe your own face floating behind your other face if your school was particularly fancy.

Just remember, we weren't taking school pictures, we were creating family heirlooms against our will.

Your Turn to Pick the Case

Thanks for hanging out with us, keeping up with the cases we’re following, and appreciating Tyrella’s school-picture modeling career as much as we do.

And before anyone asks...

Yes, we have more Tyrella throwbacks.

We’ll be back next Tuesday with more true crime, more updates, and another little trip down Millennial memory lane.

Until then...

And please respect Tyrella’s privacy during this difficult time as we have no restraint sharing her childhood photos.

We're especially fond of the cat sweatshirt.

We're officially at that point in October where Halloween candy has been in the house for two weeks, the decorations are either fully up or still sitting in a storage bin, and every trip to Target somehow ends with something pumpkin-shaped in the cart. We'd love to say we're exercising some self-control, but there's a pretty good chance the candy we bought for trick-or-treaters is going to need replacing before October 31. And speaking of Halloween, we've been thinking about how much fun this...

We have officially entered the part of the year where every morning requires a small investigation before getting dressed. It's chilly when you wake up, somehow 78 degrees by lunch, and by the time you figure out whether you need a sweater, the weather has changed its mind again. Welcome to October. 🍂 We're settling into spooky season over here, which means the Halloween decorations are coming out, we're pretending buying another seasonal candle is a completely reasonable financial decision,...

Is anyone else at the point in the year where every week feels like it lasts approximately three days? You blink, it's Monday. You answer a few emails, suddenly it's Thursday. Then somehow you're standing in the kitchen on Sunday night wondering what exactly happened to the weekend. So we're officially giving you permission to ignore whatever you're supposed to be doing for a few minutes and hang out with us instead. Last week we covered Reckless Ben & The Lego Saga Parts 1 and 2, if you...
